DES MOINES, Iowa – Wayland Baptist shined in the relays Friday at the prestigious Drake Relays, including posting victories in both the men's and women's 4x200s.
In an event in which Wayland set the meet record almost 30 years ago, the team of
Stephen Sutherland,
Justin Scruggs,
Lorenzo Dolphus and
Durawn Howard teamed in the men's college 4x200 for a first-place time of 1 minute, 24.62 seconds. That's about two seconds slower than the record of 1:22.42 that was set by WBU in 1985.
In the women's college 4x200, Wayland was represented by
Angie Quiah,
Alexis Browner,
Shani Adams and
Gortia Ferguson, who took two tours of the track in 1:36.03 for first place.
The other four relays in which Wayland participated Friday were all preliminaries, and the Pioneers qualified first or second in all of them but one.
In the women's 4x100,
Kesley Gittens, Browner, Quiah and Ferguson qualified first in 46.48 seconds, while in the 4x400 Browner, Adams, Gittens and Quiah were the fastest in 3:43.46.
For the men, Scruggs, Sutherland, Dolphus and Howard were second in the 4x100 in 40.99, while in the 4x400 Sutherland, De'Vion Simpson,
Denard Steele and Dolphus posted a 3:13.92 and did not qualify to advance.
In other finals, long jumper
Wayne Northover competed in the university/college division and came away in 11
th place with a leap of 24 feet, 2¼ inches.
On Thursday evening,
Selene Lopez finished 10
th in the women's 10,000 in 35:52.65.
