David Neuberth kept up his torrid scoring pace, and the Wayland Baptist men's soccer team kept on winning on the eve of opening their Sooner Athletic Conference schedule.
Neuberth, a senior from Sykesville, Md., got two more goals to lead the Pioneers to a 4-0 shutout win over Texas-Permian Basin here Saturday night. It was the fifth straight victory for Wayland (6-2), ranked the equivalent of 35
th in the NAIA.
After not scoring in Wayland's first four outings of the season, Neuberth has scratched in the last four and now has seven goals on the season, two short of last year's team-high nine.
Neuberth scored Wayland's first two goals against UTPB (1-2-1). The first came 19 minutes in on a corner kick that was headed to the center of the box where Neuberth drilled it in. Taval Whitakker and
Juan Sanchez were credited with a dual assist.
Whittaker also assisted on Neuberth's second goal, which he hit off the left post after a cross by Whittaker. That made it 2-0 at the 33:19 mark.
Just over three minutes later, it was 3-0 when
Renato Dos Anjos notched his second goal of the season thanks to a deflection off a save.
Yago Xavier joined the fun when he put in a rebound off a penalty kick 17½ minutes into the second half.
Wayland held a 22-9 edge in shots and a 14-4 cushion in shots on goal. Neuberth got off six shots, four of which were on target, while Xavier launched five, four of which were on goal.

John-Ramses Thomas recorded his third shutout of the season, and second in a row, by stopping four on-target shots.
The Pioneers, who have outscored opponents 19-2 during their five-game win streak, take their momentum in conference play, starting next Saturday night, Sept. 27 on the road against Oklahoma City University (1-3-1). The Stars fell to No. 11 MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) on Saturday, 4-1.
Wayland, which figures to rise in the rankings when the first regular-season Top 25 poll comes out on Tuesday, then returns home Sept. 30 to face No. 17 Science and Arts of Oklahoma (6-1).
