Westerman picks up another SAC Setter of Week award

Wayland Baptist's Ashlyn Westerman has been named Sooner Athletic Conference Setter of the Week for the second time in three weeks.

Westerman, a senior setter from Liberal, Kan., averaged 10.0 assists in the No. 22 Pioneers' seven-game span against John Brown University and St. Gregory's. She had an equal stat line in both games, recording 35 assists to go with eight digs.

Mid-America Christian's Shannon Niemeier was named the SAC Volleyball Player of the Week while additional honors went to John Brown's Audrey Dearien as hitter of the week and Southwest Assemblies of God University's Emmalee Smith as libero of the week..

Niemeier, a junior from Carlsbad, N.M., posted impressive numbers for the Evangels in losses to Oklahoma Wesleyan and Oklahoma City. She averaged 3.88 kills per game and had an attack percentage of .128. She had a team-best 23 kills in a 3-2 loss to Oklahoma City in which she also recorded 11 digs.
 
Dearien, a junior outside hitter from Frisco, averaged 4.14 kills in a seven-game span in JBU wins against Southwestern Christian and Wayland. For the week, Dearien had an attack percentage of .459 and had only one error in 61 total attack attempts. She had 13 kills and 10 digs in the 3-1 victory over Wayland.

Smith, a junior setter from Red Oak, averaged 5.45 digs in an 11-game span for SAGU in matches against Texas Wesleyan, Wiley (Texas) and Southwestern Christian. Her best game came in the 3-0 win against Wiley when she had 29 digs.

Wayland (9-8 overall, 3-2 SAC) hosts West Texas A&M (12-3) at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Hutcherson Center. The Pioneers then return to SAC play at 7 p.m. Friday at home against Oklahoma City University.
