Box Score One of these days, the goal is going to open up for the Wayland Baptist women's soccer team. When it does, it won't be too soon for Pioneer coach
Shiloh Posey.
Â
For the second time in three days, the Pioneers couldn't buy a goal, and Wayland fell to a tough Lubbock Christian team on a rain-soaked pitch at J.V. Hilliard Field on Saturday, 3-0.
Â
"You have to take advantage of your opportunities," Posey said.
Â
Unlike Thursday when Wayland (0-3-1) had 11 shots on goal in a 2-1 loss to 19
th-ranked Our Lady of the Lake, the Pioneers had just two shots on goal out of seven total shots against LCU (2-0). But both of Wayland's on-target shots – both from
Jodian Morris – were prime scoring chances that didn't connect. The Pioneers also had a shot early in the game hit off the crossbar and ricochet straight down. LCU was able to save it before the Pioneers could knock it in.
Â
"We had a couple of point-blank opportunities," Posey said. "It doesn't matter if you get two chances and make them both or 25 chances and don't make any, it comes down to finishing the chances you get."
Â
LCU ended with 19 shots and 10 on-goal. The Lady Chaps' first goal came almost 29 minutes into the action on a shot across the box to the lower right corner by Brooke Wendl just past the outstretched arms of WBU goalkeeper
Bailey Stengler. It was Wendel's fourth goal of the young season after she scored three times in LCU's 9-2 season-opening win over University of the Southwest on Thursday in Lubbock.
Â
LCU made it 2-0 about 90 seconds before halftime on a goal by Ashley Ledford, who connected after Wayland's defender and a Lady Chap collided and went down in a heap on the soggy turf. Ledford was able to poke it in before Wayland could clear it.
Â
"I thought we outplayed them the first 30 minutes, at least," Posey said.
Â
The final goal, some 20 minutes into the second half, came from Audra Park on a shot over Stengler right in front of the WBU goal.
Â
Posey said the Pioneers still have a lot to work on, especially working together better.
Â
"We're not moving back and forth together like we need to be. We still have a lot of splits and gaps out there," he said. "We need to get where we're working as a unit instead of individual players."
Â
The Pioneers hit the road for their next two matches against "very tough" Baker University (1-2) in Baldwin City, Kan., at 2:30 p.m. Friday before taking on No. 24 Benedictine College at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, in Atchison, Kan. WBU's next home match is Sept. 18 against NCAA Division II West Texas A&M.
Â
Posey said it's time for the Pioneers to step up and decide to be great.
Â
"We can either prove or disprove any predictions that have been made about this team."
