Box Score Two days after one of their most disappointing outcomes of the season, the Wayland Baptist Flying Queens put together one of their most dominating.
Iesha Greer recorded a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds to lead Wayland to a suffocating 90-53 Sooner Athletic Conference victory over University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma on Saturday afternoon in Hutcherson Center.
"We got back into our running game," Wayland coach Alesha Robertson said of how the Queens turned it up a notch Saturday. "It helps when the refs are letting you play and be aggressive, and when you don't have players in foul trouble."
After falling on the road to Mid-America Christian, 84-66, on Thursday, Wayland (8-7, 4-2) controlled Saturday's contest from the get-go, leading 40-25 at halftime and then outscoring the Lady Drovers (6-8, 3-3) in the second half, 50-28.
Wayland, ranked the equivalent of 32
nd, shot 63 percent (19-of-30) from the field in the final 20 minutes and 54 percent (38-of-71) for the game.
"I felt like we shot the ball better today than we have in a long time," Robertson said. "It always helps when you're shooting well."
The 90 points and 37-point win margin represent the second-highest of the season for Wayland, behind only the 110 they put up in a 61-point drumming of University of the Southwest.
Besides Greer, who turned in her fifth double-double of the season and third in four games, Wayland got 14 points from
LaTericka Anderson, 12 from
Shawna Monreal and 10 from
Honesty Sullivan. All 10 Flying Queens scored.
"We had scorers in different positions, which hasn't always happened and which is something we've needed," said Robertson, who lauded bench players
Gabby Gonzales and
Regan Hestand for their shooting. Both had two 3-pointers and ended with eight and six points, respectively.
"Regan and Gabby can shoot, they just have to get their confidence up and believe that it's going in," Robertson said.
The Flying Queens led it by just one, 13-12, before going on an 11-0 run for the first big push of the game. The Lady Drovers trimmed it to seven, but another push gave Wayland a 15-point intermission edge.
Wayland came out strong in the second half, too, opening up a 56-30 lead. The Flying Queens' largest lead was 38 points.
USAO, which shot just 33 percent (20-of-61) from the field, had only one player in double figures, Ebony Nelms with 20.
Wayland dominated the boards, 44-31, and forced 28 turnovers.
"I felt like we didn't make as many mistakes today, and that's super important. When something bad happens you have to do a good job of forgetting it and doing a good job on the other end," Robertson said.
The Flying Queens are back in the Hutch for their next two games, at 6 p.m. Thursday against St. Gregory's (2-13, 1-5) and 3 p.m. Jan. 24 against John Brown (7-10, 2-4). St. Greg's fell on Saturday to Texas Wesleyan, 74-45, while John Brown knocked off Southwestern Assemblies of God, 52-43.
Although neither team has a winning record, Robertson said the Flying Queens won't be looking past them.
"St. Greg played MACU close, and they beat us last week (by 18), so that's going to be a tough one," she said. "They only have six players that play, but they have a lightning-quick guard that we have to find an answer for.
"John Brown is going to be a challenge, too."
