Flying Queens stomp St. Gregory's, 89-42

Box Score

Wayland Baptist turned in another stellar defensive performance, and several Flying Queens produced impressive statistical performances as WBU strolled to an 89-42 Sooner Athletic Conference victory over St. Gregory's on Monday night in Hutcherson Center.

Wayland scored the first 16 points of the game, and it was never close after that.

The 42 points were the fewest allowed by Wayland all season, eclipsing the 43 allowed to Benedictine University early in the season and the 44 scored by John Brown University last Saturday.

The Flying Queens (10-7, 6-2 SAC), ranked the equivalent of 33rd, gave up just 16 points in the first half, after which Wayland was in command, 42-16. In the second half against John Brown two days earlier, the Flying Queens allowed only 14 points.

Stephanie Afunugo led four Flying Queens in double figures with 18 points. LaTericka Anderson and Iesha Greer added 14 each, and Shawna Monreal put in 12. Nina Sato tacked on nine points, matching her season-high, and barely missed her first career double-double as she grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds. Sato did her damage off the bench, although Wayland's substitutes wound up with as many, or more, minutes as the starters.

Besides Sato, two others Queens – Greer and Honesty Sullivan, who started in place of injured point guard Laura Castillo – had double-digit rebounds with 11 each. It was Greer's sixth double-double of the season and fourth in six games. Sullivan contributed eight points.

Wayland crushed the Cavaliers on the boards, 69-31, and the Flying Queens hit 27-of-36 free throws (75 percent) compared to 13-of-15 (87 percent) for St. Greg's.

It was Wayland's second most-lopsided loss of the season, behind a 110-49 win over University of the Southwest.

Stacy Lee led the Cavaliers with 17 points.

Wayland plays its next four SAC games on the road, starting on Thursday in Shawnee against No. 8 Oklahoma Baptist to round out the first half of conference play. The Flying Queens host McMurry on Feb. 2 in a non-conference game.
