OKLAHOMA CITY – Wayland Baptist won four of its five matches, falling only to top-ranked and two-time defending national champion King University, on the first day of the Cliff Keen Invitational being held at Oklahoma City University.
The No. 8 Pioneers won their first four matches against Lyon College (Ark.), 36-11; Oklahoma City Blue, 29-18; Lindenwood-Belleville (Ill.), 40-7; and Missouri Baptist, 24-23. Wayland then fell to King (Tenn.), 33-8.

Aaron Meister said his team did well, considering it overcame several obstacles.
"We wrestled well enough to win," he said. "We were a little flat today because we've had a long week due to our schedule of events. We had to wake up much earlier all week long to work out, and we made weight twice this week (Wayland defeated Warner Pacific, Ore., 30-7, on Thursday in its home-opener).
"Despite all of that we were still able to come out and perform, and that's a testament to these young ladies and their desire to compete."
Meister complimented freshman
Brittany Marshall who went undefeated on the day in the 170-pound division. She was awarded two forfeits and won all three of her actual bouts by fall.
Meanwhile, the Wayland Blue team was winless in its five outings, falling to Simon Fraser, Canada, 37-10; McKendree Black (Ill.), 35-1; Cumberlands Red, 34-11; Ottawa (Kan.), 37-11, and Missouri Valley, 27-9.
Action concludes on Saturday with Wayland Gold competing in the Gold Bracket.
"There are 24 teams in this tournament, and we're guaranteed to finish no worse than eighth. We're ranked eighth (in the WCWA Poll), so whatever happens tomorrow is icing on the cake. If we do better than eighth, great!"
