OKLAHOMA CITY – After winning four of five matches Friday, the Wayland Baptist women's wrestling team didn't fare as well at the Cliff Keen Invitational on Saturday when the Pioneers lost three Gold Bracket matches.
Eighth-ranked Wayland fell to No. 4 Lindenwood (Mo.) in Saturday's first match before bowing to No. 7 Cumberlands (Ky.) (Scores were not immediately available). In the match for seventh place, Wayland was downed by top-ranked Campbellsville, 36-10.
On Friday, WBU defeated No. 14 Lyon University (Ark.), 36-11; Oklahoma City Blue, 29-18; No. 14 Lindenwood-Belleville (Ill.), 40-7; and No. 9 Missouri Baptist, 24-23. Wayland then fell to two-time defending national champion and second-ranked King (Tenn.), 33-8.
The results took Wayland's season record to 5-4. The Pioneers opened the season on Thursday by defeating No. 21 Warner Pacific (Ore.), 30-7.
Meanwhile, the Wayland Blue team was winless in its six matches in Oklahoma City, falling on Friday to No. 5 and tournament champion Simon Fraser, Canada, 37-10; No. 6 McKendree Black (Ill.), 35-1; No. 7 Cumberlands Red, 34-11; No. 19 Ottawa (Kan.), 37-11, and No. 13 Missouri Valley, 27-9. WBU Blue lost its lone match on Saturday in the single-elimination Bronze Bracket to Waldorf, 32-11.
The WBU women will be back in Oklahoma City for their next outing against OCU on Nov. 4 and against Missouri Baptist on Nov. 5.
