Box Score The Wayland Baptist men's basketball team continued winning Saturday night in Hutcherson Center, getting double-doubles from three players and double-figure scoring from six as the Pioneers forged their second straight win of the young season against the Southwestern Adventist University Knights, 117-67.
Playing the final game of the Pioneer Tip-Off Classic, No. 12 Wayland (2-0) was ferocious on defense, causing 23 turnovers from full-court presses and traps, and limited the Knights (0-2) to 33 percent shooting for the game.
The Pioneers were able to limit the Knights' leading scorer, freshman Travis Gagau, to 16 points on 5-of-14 shooting because of double teams, which led to numerous errant passes.
Wayland's offense flourished as it shot 53 percent from the field. Of the 117 points, 97 were due to forced turnovers or points in the paint. The Pioneers also clobbered the Knights in bench scoring, 41-2.
For the Pioneers, junior
Maurice Redmond had a game-high 31 points, 14 rebounds and four steals along with three assists. Senior
Jordon Johnson finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds, while junior
Cody Thomas had 14 points and 12 rebounds.
Also scoring in double figures were
Robert Waters with 21 points, Marcus Ellis with 12 and
Ruben Lopez with 11. Waters' seven assists led the team, and he also pulled down seven rebounds.
The last time the Pioneers scored 117 points and won by this large of a margin was two years ago against Barclay College in a 117-54 blowout.
Next for the Pioneers will be the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Hutch. In the match-up, the Greyhounds lead the all-time series, 34-31, but the Pioneers have the last victory in 2000, 92-73. Â Â
