No. 10 Flying Queens rout War Hawks, 88-25

Box Score
In a game where the opposing team didn't score until near the end of the first quarter, the 10th-ranked Wayland Baptist Flying Queens took control of the game and never gave McMurry a chance Monday night at Hutcherson Center, clobbering the War Hawks, 88-25.

The Queens (2-0) were coming off of a Saturday exhibition loss against the NCAA Division I Abilene Christian University Wildcats, 96-71. They took their frustration out on the NCAA Division III War Hawks (0-2) by holding them scoreless until the 1:37 mark of the first period. For the game, the Queens forced the War Hawks to an abysmal 13 percent shooting from the field (8-of-58) while also forcing 29 turnovers.

Every Flying Queen scored in the contest, and four – Jade Jones, Krystal Forthan, Brianna Bogard and Shawna Monreal – netted double figures. Jones had a double-double with a game-high 13 points and 13 boards, while Forthan got 12 points and Monreal and Bogard 10 apiece. Nina Sato finished one point and one rebound shy of a double-double.

"I felt like our seniors stepped up tonight and our players coming off the bench gave us some good minutes," Coach Alesha Robertson-Ellis said. "We are slowly but surely piecing things together."

Robertson-Ellis also was pleased with back-up point guard Jada Riley, who tied for game-high assist honors with teammate Maci Merket, each with six.

"Jada was very explosive and ran the point very well," the coach said. "She pushes the ball well and is very aggressive on the defensive end."

Wayland led 20-4 after the first period and 53-11 at the half.

The 25 points were the fewest allowed by Wayland since a 96-14 win over Arlington Baptist during the 2012-13 season.

The Queens next head to Montana to face two ranked opponents in No. 6 Montana St.-Northern at 3 p.m. (Mountain Time) Friday followed by No. 11 Great Falls University at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

"We will have to play at our best to beat these teams, especially in their house," Robertson-Ellis said.
