Box Score SHAWNEE, Okla. – Wayland Baptist scored 19 straight points in the first half to take control of the game, and the No. 24 Flying Queens went on to dismantle St. Gregory's University in Sooner Athletic Conference play here Saturday afternoon, 75-48.
In the final regular-season road game of the season for Wayland (17-9, 12-4 SAC),
Shawna Monreal scored 18 points while
Nina Sato contributed a season-high 13 points and 13 rebounds as the freshman recorded her first career double-double.
All 10 Flying Queens scored, including
LaTericka Anderson with 11 points.
Regan Hestand pulled down eight rebounds as the Flying Queens outrebounded St. Greg's, 45-31.
The Cavaliers (3-22, 2-14) scored the first three points of the game, but that was their only lead. Monreal immediately matched the 3 for Wayland then scored the next two buckets as well as part of a 9-0 run that put the Flying Queens on top for good.
WBU led 11-7 when the Flying Queens went on a 19-0 run that made it 30-7.
Gabby Gonzales nailed a pair of 3-pointers near the end of that blitz.
The closed the Cavaliers came after that was 15 points. Wayland was up by 18 at the half, 37-19, and the Flying Queens' largest lead, 35 points at 68-33, came on a bucket by Anderson with 6:10 left in the game.
After shooting 56 percent from the field (15-of-27) in the first half, Wayland wound up shooting 44 percent (28-of-63), including 7-of-25 (28 percent) from 3-point range, while hitting 16-of-29 free throws (75 percent). St. Greg's managed to shoot just 33 percent from the field.
The Flying Queens return home for their final two games, including a showdown with No. 7 Oklahoma Baptist (21-4, 13-3) at 6 p.m. Thursday as Wayland tries to tie the Lady Bison for second place. OBU defeated Texas Wesleyan on Saturday in Shawnee, 59-51. The Flying Queens fell to the Lady Bison when they met previously, 64-56.
Wayland then ends the regular-season by hosting Mid-America Christian at 1 p.m. Saturday.
