Box Score ODESSA – Wayland Baptist enjoyed its second consecutive straight-set win, and seventh of the season, when the Pioneers rolled over the University of Texas of the Permian Basin here Tuesday evening, 25-12, 25-20, 25-16.
"We didn't have a scouting report on these guys, and the girls did a good job making adjustments," Wayland coach
Jim Giacomazzi said. "I was pleased overall with how the girls worked."
On the day they jumped two spots in the NAIA Top 25 to No. 21, the Pioneers (11-3) flexed their muscles against the Falcons (1-6). Shalaha Hawkins, the three-time reigning Sooner Athletic Conference Attacker of the Week, led Wayland with 11 kills, out of 34, and hit .346.
Cindy Horn added seven kills. UTPB hit just .017.
Rossanna Ramos dug 14 balls, while
Emily Welch and
Cat Wiechmann had nine apiece and Hawkins, Horn and
Mallorie Ellis each each. Hawkins put down two solo and five block assists as Wayland ended with eight total, including four in a row to help end the second set which was tied at 20. Wiechmann dished out 14 assists and Welch 11.
Giacomazzi said the Pioneers did a better job of finishing off sets.
"They kicked it up after timeouts and finished things off," he said. "We had been a little lacking being able to put a nail in the coffin."
The coach said his team is still making too many mental mistakes, "but started doing a better job the third set. They did a good job staying focused."
Wayland returns to SAC play at 7 p.m. Friday against Bacone (0-5, 0-1) and 11 a.m. Saturday against John Brown (10-4, 0-1). Bacone fell to Mid-America Christian on Tuesday, 3-1, while John Brown lost to Oklahoma City in three.
