Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HOUSTON – A hot day at Houston Sports Park was made extra punishing for Wayland Baptist's soccer teams as both played to double-overtime ties with St. Thomas, the women ending in a 1-1 draw and the men winding up 2-2.

For the Pioneer women (0-2-1), Jodian Morris scored Wayland's goal some five minutes into the match on a ball that came across the front of the goal and was pinged around before the senior knocked it in.

St. Thomas (1-2-1) tied it up with about 12 minutes to go in the match.

Wayland was able to hold off the Celts despite being down a player after a suspension.

"It was a hot day on turf, but the girls played really, really hard," WBU coach Shiloh Posey said. "I'm proud of the way they played. We were able to put some things together that helped us get off to a better start."

Statistics were not immediately available.

Wayland next plays its home-opener at 3 p.m. Friday against Emporia State (Kan.). The NCAA Division II Hornets are 2-0, having defeated Harding University, 3-1, and East Central University, 3-0.

"We're looking forward to having four or five days off and then getting to play our first official match at home," Posey said.

In the men's match, Wayland's goals were scored by Yago Xavier and Mohammad Chahine, with assists coming from Emmanuel Emmas and Taval Whittaker.

No other information was available.

The Pioneers' record now is 2-1-1, while St. Thomas, which is ranked the equivalent of 36th in the NAIA Preseason Top 25 poll, fell to 0-2-1. The Celts dropped their first two matches to Mid-America Christian, 3-2 in double-overtime, and to Southwestern Oklahoma, 4-2.

Wayland returns home to take on Eastern New Mexico at 5 p.m. Friday. The Greyhounds are 2-0 after defeating Colorado-Colorado Springs, 3-2, and Adams State (Colo.), 3-0. ENMU plays Texas-Permian Basin in Odessa on Tuesday.
