Krystal Forthan and
Laura Castillo led the way for No. 21 Wayland Baptist here Thursday night as the Flying Queens defeated Sooner Athletic Conference foe Texas Wesleyan, 91-60, to extend their winning streak to seven games.
"If this wasn't our best game, it was really close to," Wayland coach
Alesha Robertson-Ellis said. "We handled the pressure well tonight."
The Lady Rams (8-8, 2-5 SAC) held the lead only twice, the last time at 6-5. From there, the Flying Queens (11-4, 6-1) took over and never looked back. Wayland was up 18-13 after the first 10 minutes and by halftime was in total control, leading 42-26.
Forthan ended with her second double-double of the season and first since the season-opener, recording a season-high in both points with 20 points and rebounds with 15, while
Laura Castillo also netted 20 points and made four of her five 3-pointers.
"Krystal came off the bench a different player tonight," Robertson-Ellis said about the transfer. "This was her turnaround game, and I was really proud of her for that. Laura shot the ball really well."
Also for the Queens, senior
Stephanie Afunugo finished with 15 points and six boards. Shawna and
Shayla Monreal ended with 13 and 10 points, respectively.

The Queens out-rebounded the Lady Rams, 37-30, and held a 21-12 advantage in assists.
The Flying Queens will finish up the week at 1 p.m. Saturday against Southwestern Assemblies of God University (11-7, 4-3), which won Thursday over Mid-America Christian, 75-68.
"I feel like our teams are a lot alike," Robertson-Ellis said of the Flying Queens and Lady Lions. "We're going to have to apply a lot of pressure on defense and execute on offense."
