Cold-shooting Flying Queens fall to LCU

Box Score Box Score  LUBBOCK – Defending NCAA Division II national champion Lubbock Christian scored the first six points of the game and cold-shooting Wayland Baptist could never catch up as the 22nd-ranked Flying Queens dropped an exhibition game to their former Sooner Athletic Conference rival on Monday night in the Rip Griffin Center, 72-50.

The Lady Chaps, ranked No. 11 in NCAA D-II, held a 24-9 lead after the first quarter and Wayland fell behind by 23 early in the second. Wayland scored eight straight points to cut it to 11, 40-29, midway through the third period, but LCU responded with a 15-3 run to push the margin to 55-32.

The closest the Flying Queens got after that was 19.

Poor shooting plagued Wayland, which managed just 21 percent (13-of-63) from the field, including 5-of-22 (23 percent) 3-pointers. The Flying Queens did hit their free throws, 19-of-22 (86 percent).

LCU shot 49 percent (25-of-51) from the field, including 11-of-21 (52 percent) from beyond the arc,

"We didn't shoot it very well and they shot it really well," WBU coach Alesha Robertson-Ellis said. "I think our defense did about as well as they could, but the offensive end has to get better."

Shayla Monreal and Jade Jones led WBU with 10 points each. LCU was paced by Tess Bruffey's 20 points and Bailey Haist's 19.

Wayland was out-rebounded, 50-30, while the Flying Queens turned the ball over just 11 times compared to LCU's 24.

"We just have to get better," Robertson-Ellis said.

Because the game was considered an exhibition the Flying Queens' record remains 3-0.

Wayland next competes in the Thanksgiving Classic in Pueblo, Colo., taking on a pair of NCAA D-IIs in Colorado-Colorado Springs at 6 p.m. (CST) Friday followed by host Colorado State-Pueblo at 6 Saturday.
