Cristhian Ospina was quick to credit one thing for the Wayland Baptist men's soccer team's record-setting 9-1 rout of Huston-Tillotson on Saturday morning at Hilliard Field: hard work.
Â
"The result of working hard was having all these goals," the coach said. "I was proud of the guys for their effort."
Â
The nine goals shattered the program record for goals in a match of six scored against Mid-America Christian in a 6-0 shutout midway through the 2013 season.
Â
Seven different Pioneers scored goals Saturday, with
Emmanuel Emmas the only repeat scorer as he logged the team's final two goals. One own-goal was recorded.
Â
It was the first goals of the season for all seven Pioneers as Wayland (2-2) had scored just twice in its three previous matches, both by
Ezequiel Amestoy.
Â
"We looked a lot better today, and I feel like it was because they were organized and working hard," Ospina said.
Â
Eight of Wayland's goals came unassisted.
Taval Whittaker was credited with the lone assist on a goal by
Jonathan Luna. Whittaker also scored.
Â
"We worked on our finishing this week. That's why the score was like it was," Ospina said.
Â
Wayland, which led 5-0 at halftime, got playing time for 20 players.
Â
"I was proud of the guys who came in as subs because they kept the level (of play) up," Ospina said.
Â
Emmas was one of those subs who scored, along with
Javier Parry. Starters finding the net were
Mohammad Chahine,
Ross Brown,
Guillermo Deal, Luna and Whittaker.
Â
Wayland took 31 total shots – 15 were on goal – compared to just four shots for the Rams. WBU goalkeeper João Souza was credited with two saves.
Â
Huston-Tillotson scored its lone goal early in the second half. The Pioneers quickly thwarted any thought of a comeback, however.
Â
The Rams, who were coming off a 6-1 loss at West Texas A&M a day earlier, fell to 0-4.
Â
Wayland, meanwhile, saw its last game cancelled. The Pioneers were off to an early 2-0 lead over Texas-Permian Basin on Wednesday when lightning in Odessa forced the cancellation.
Â
Saturday's match kicked off a seven-game home stand for Wayland, which next plays University of the Southwest at 4 p.m. Wednesday. Southwest won its season-opener of Arizona Christian, 2-1. The Mustangs played Paul Quinn later Saturday.
Â
"We're working hard but still have a long way to go," Ospina said. "We still have to fix a lot of things."
