Box Score SHAWNEE, Okla. – Wayland Baptist turned in its most prolific scoring game of the season here Thursday night as the No. 19 Flying Queens rolled to a 104-62 Sooner Athletic Conference victory over St. Gregory's.
Jade Jones scored 17 points and junior
Gabby Gonzales added a career-high 14 – including four 3-pointers – to lead the Flying Queens (17-2, 8-1 SAC) to their 12
th straight win.
Shawna Monreal and
Maci Merket tacked on 12 each and
Shayla Monreal put in 10 to give Wayland five players in double figures.
"I felt like our players played hard tonight," Wayland coach
Alesha Robertson-Ellis said. "We had a better second half than first, but we got a chance to give our bench a lot of minutes which always helps. We were well-balanced tonight, which makes us stronger.
"I was proud of the way we played."
It was the third time in Wayland's last six games the Flying Queens have reached the century mark.
WBU ended with 28 assists, eight by
Morgan Bennett, and outrebounded St. Greg's (2-13, 0-8), 48-29, with Jones pulling down a game-best eight. Bennett came up with five steals.
The visitors led 45-29 at halftime and then outscored the Lady Cavaliers in the third quarter, 36-7, to assume a commanding 81-36 lead.
Kylee Tatum led SGU with 24 points.
Wayland shot 51 percent (39-of-76) from the field, 40 percent (10-of-25) from 3-point range, and 70 percent (16-of-23) from the free-throw line, where
Deborah VanDijk was 7-of-9.
The Flying Queens wrap up the first half of conference play at 1 p.m. Saturday in Chickasha, Okla., against Science and Arts of Oklahoma (8-9, 6-3), which fell on Thursday to No. 7 Oklahoma City, 85-70.
