Jade Jones scored 25 points and
Shayla Monreal 19 to lead Wayland Baptist to a 79-66 Sooner Athletic Conference victory over University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma here Saturday afternoon.
"The team did what it took to win against a good team," Wayland coach Alesha Ro bertson-Ellis said. "USAO was very physical and they worked hard every second."
It was the 13
th straight win for the No. 19 Flying Queens (18-2, 9-1 SAC).
After leading by 10 in the first quarter, Wayland was up by just three early in the third quarter and only five late in the third. That's when the Flying Queens came alive, getting back-to-back 3-pointers by Monreal. Sister
Shawna Monreal converted a traditional 3-point play to make it a 12-point game, 58-46.
USAO whittled its deficit to six midway through the fourth, by a bomb by Shawna followed by free throws from
Deborah VanDijk and Jones quickly doubled the margin.
The Queens put it away with lay-ups from VanDijk and Jones then a 3-pointer by Jones as part of a 9-0 push. WBU's largest lead was 17.
Shawna and
Morgan Bennett added eight points each while VanDijk got seven. Bennett also had six rebounds and five assists.
Jones hit 12-of-13 free throws as Wayland outscored the Drovers at the foul line by 11 (26-of-35 vs. 15-of-20).
USAO held a 45-34 edge on the boards, but Wayland forced the Drovers into 25 turnovers.
"The seniors stepped up today. I was really proud of them," Robertson-Ellis said.
Tierra Coffey and Dierra Ely both had double-doubles for USAO with 18 points and 10 rebounds apiece.
"I thought we played really well on the defensive end. We brought a lot of energy and I thought we executed well on that side," Robertson-Ellis said. "We have to get better on the offensive end, and that's my fault. We haven't spent enough time working on offense, but Monday we plan on working on it and getting ready for Bacone."
Saturday's game marked the end of the first half of SAC play with the Flying Queens tied atop the standings with the only team they've already played twice, No. 7 Oklahoma City (17-2, 8-1). The Flying Queens stay on the road next week in Muskogee, Okla., to take on Bacone (6-11, 4-5) on Thursday night then Siloam Springs, Ark., to go against No. 23 John Brown (14-6, 6-3) on Saturday afternoon.
