Box Score MUSKOGEE, Okla. – It's not exactly how they wanted to accomplish it, but the Wayland Baptist men's soccer team set a program record here Saturday afternoon.
The Pioneers set a new unbeaten streak mark for WBU soccer when they tied Bacone College in Sooner Athletic Conference play, 1-1 in double overtime.
Wayland had won eight straight matches, tying a record from the 2013 season. While the Pioneers weren't able to log a ninth consecutive victory on Saturday, the tie still allows the team to count the record.
Against Bacone, WBU got off to a great start with
Ricardo Ramos scoring just 8:46 into the action. It was Ramos' fourth goal in five matches and sixth goal of the season, tying
Cooper Gaypia for high-team honors.
Bacone got its loan goal in the 39
th minute from Jose Navarro.
Neither team scored the rest of the way, despite two extra periods.
Nine different Wayland players combined for 20 shots, including five in overtime, while Bacone got off 14 shots, two in the extra periods. The Pioneers were on target much of the night with 15 on-goal attempts compared to nine for the Warriors. Ramos and
James Westfield took four shots apiece and three on-goal shots each.
Ziggy Camejo went the entire 110 minutes in goal for Wayland.
The tie leaves Wayland with a record of 9-1-1 overall and 3-0-1 in the conference, a half-game behind Southwestern Christian (10-2, 4-0). Bacone (7-3-1, 2-1-1) stands tied for fourth in the league with John Brown, trailing third-place Oklahoma City (9-2, 2-1) by a half-game.
The Pioneers have another tough match Tuesday when they host OCU at 6 p.m. The Stars tripped USAO on the road Friday, 2-0. Tuesday's match will be followed by two more challenges against USAO (7-4-1, 2-2) on the road Oct. 14 then Southwestern Christian at home Oct. 17.
