Wayland Baptist basketball is asking for fans' help in supporting the county's food pantry at both of its home doubleheaders this week.
In lieu of admission, canned food donations to Faith In Sharing House (FISH) will be accepted at the door at both the Thursday night and Saturday afternoon doubleheaders at Hutcherson Center. Monetary donations also will be accepted.
Thursday is a big night for WBU basketball as the No. 23, undefeated Flying Queens go after their 1600th all-time program victory against Texas Wesleyan at 6 p.m., followed by the Pioneers (7-1) taking on defending NAIA national champion and top-ranked Texas Wesleyan at 8.
Should the Flying Queens win, a special 1,600 wins banner will be presented and commemorative T-shirts will be distributed.
Then on Saturday, Wayland hosts Southwestern Assemblies of God in another doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. If the Queens win Thursday, the 1,600 wins banner will be formally presented before the game by members of the Hutcherson Flying Queens Foundation, which is meeting this weekend as part of its annual reunion.
The Flying Queens program is up for nomination into the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.
