rd-ranked Wayland Baptist Flying Queens continued their winning was Saturday afternoon when they gained a 66-47 Sooner Athletic Conference victory over Southwestern Assemblies of God University
Â
"It was a team effort. They played well together and it's nice to see different players step up and be hot at different times," Wayland Coach
Alesha Ellis said. "We came out playing well just like we did in the last game."
Â
The Queens (6-0, 2-0 SAC) got off to a quick start with back-to-back 3-pointers from Morgan Bennett. Deborah VanDijk contributed Wayland's next five points with a pair of layups and a free throw, and Maci Merket scored her initial two points mid-first quarter off a steal and fast-break jumper in the paint, giving the Queens a 17-6 lead over the Lady Lions (4-4, 1-1).
Â
The Queens led 38-21 at the end of the first half and went into the second with just as much intensity.
Â
Bennett, a sophomore, finished with a career-high 20 points on 8-of-11 field goals, including 4-of-5 3s, and four assists.
Â
"Morgan played hard and shot the ball really well today," Ellis said.
Â
Bennett was followed by Kendrick Clark with 12 points and VanDijk with 11.
Â
"My post players did a great job of defending No. 24 (Mckenzie Martin), who is a 6'2 shooter, so we had to put our posts out on the perimeter to guard her. Kendrick did that very well," Ellis said. Martin finished with three points.
Â
Merket ended with just two points but had a team-best seven rebounds.
Â
"Maci is a guard and she had the most rebounds, which is a good thing to see," Ellis said.
Â
Wayland had a lot of power from the bench as 10 of 11 players scored.
Â
"Each player got to get in the game and contribute today, and as a team they got the job done," Ellis said. "They were more composed today and executed and let the game come to them."
Â
SAGU was led by Lexi Rich with 19 points and Kiarra Glenn with 16. The rest of the Lady Lions combined for only 12 points.
Â
The Flying Queens will compete in their next conference game against Southwestern Christian at 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16 in Bethany, Okla., kicking off a five-game road swing that includes a tournament in Hawaii Dec. 19 and 20.
