The St. Gregory's Cavaliers didn't stand a chance against No. 16 Wayland Baptist on Saturday afternoon in Hutcherson Center as the Flying Queens left them behind in the Sooner Athletic Conference contest by a final score of 90-47.
St. Gregory's (2-19, 0-14 SAC), which stands last in the conference standings still looking for their first league win, tried to stay in it but was wildly outscored in three of the four quarters.
The Flying Queens (21-3, 12-2) were up 21-10 after the first 10 minutes and had doubled up the Cavaliers, 46-23, by halftime. SGU was only outscored by two in the third but the Flying Queens got rolling again in the fourth and won that period, 28-10.
"Those are the types of games we go into and just try to get better at something, get better at our weaknesses," Wayland coach
Alesha Robertson-Ellis said. "I think that in the second half we came back and executed on both ends better than we did in the first."
Five Queens reached double figures, with freshman
Kendrick Clark leading the way with 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting, including a pair of 3s.
Jade Jones followed with 12 points, while
Maci Merket and
Deborah VanDijk had 11 each.
Nina Sato added 10. Two players,
Shayla Monreal and
Savannah Cognasi, tacked on eight apiece, barely missing giving the Flying Queens seven in double-figures.

Morgan Bennett both grabbed eight rebounds and Cognasi seven, while Bennett had six assists.
Wayland dominated almost every statistical category, including shooting percentage (44 percent to 30 percent), rebounds (56-31), assists (20-6), and turnovers (12-22). The Flying Queens missed only one free throw the entire game, finishing 11-of-12.
"It was good for the younger girls to get in and be able to play and gain some more experience. It's nice to just get confidence up and get the win," Robertson-Ellis said.
The Flying Queens return to the road next week, first going to Waxahachie to face Southwestern Assemblies of God (10-13, 3-11) at 6 p.m. Thursday before playing in Fort Worth against Texas Wesleyan 15-10, 7-7) at 1 p.m. Saturday. SAGU fell at home Saturday to Southwestern Christian, 76-67, while Wesleyan won at home over USAO, 83-58.
In the first half of SAC play, Wayland won at home over SAGU, 68-38, and Wesleyan, 70-65.
