Box Score WAXAHACHIE – Six players scored in double figures as No. 13 Wayland Baptist secured a 110-67 Sooner Athletic Conference victory over Southwestern Assemblies of God University here Thursday night.
The 110 points marked a season-high for the Flying Queens (22-3, 13-2 SAC) and was the most scored by the team in more than three years, since a 119-68 victory over St Gregory's (Okla.) on Jan. 30, 2014. WBU also defeated University of the Southwest (N.M.), 110-49, on Nov. 22, 2014.
Sophomore
Maci Merket's 16 points paced Wayland. Freshmen
Kendrick Clark and
Savannah Cognasi, who like Merket also came off the bench, ended with 15 each while
Jade Jones and freshman
Deborah VanDijk got 14 apiece.
Shayla Monreal added 13.
Wayland matched a season-high by hitting 12 3-pointers out of 26 attempts (46 percent), with Cognasi's 4-of-4 effort leading the way. The Flying Queens connected on 92 percent of their free throws, missing just twice in 24 tries. Merket, Clark, VanDijk and
Nina Sato were all 4-of-4 from the stripe.
Wayland outscored SAGU 32-17 in the first quarter and led at the half, 58-35.
The Flying Queens outrebounded the Lady Lions (10-14, 3-12), 57-40. Jones' 10 boards helped give her a fifth double-double of the season and first since Dec. 12.
Jada Riley led Wayland with six assists.
Wayland won by 43 points after defeating SAGU when the teams met in Plainview on Jan 21 by 40, 68-38.
The Flying Queens now head to Fort Worth to take on Texas Weleyan (16-10, 8-7), a 75-59 winner at home over St. Gregory's on Thursday. Wayland edged the Lady Rams, 70-65, when they met in Plainview on Jan. 19.
