Box Score FORT WORTH – Texas Wesleyan gave Wayland Baptist all it wanted back on Jan. 19 in Plainview before the Flying Queens pulled out a five-point win.
On Saturday, the Lady Rams gave WBU all it wanted and more as Texas Wesleyan rallied from 13 points down in the last four minutes of regulation and went on to knock off the No. 13 Flying Queens in overtime, 91-85.
Wayland (22-4, 13-3 Sooner Athletic Conference), which last month defeated Wesleyan 70-65, led 73-60 with 4:10 left in the fourth quarter, but the Lady Rams (17-10, 9-7) went on a game-ending 17-4 run to tie it. Texas Wesleyan's Alycia Louallen knocked down a 3-pointer with 30 seconds left to knot it at 77, and after Wayland turned it over on an offensive foul with two seconds to go, the Flying Queens were headed to their first overtime of the season.
Senior
Shayla Monreal started off the extra period by making a 3-pointer 16 seconds in, but the Flying Queens didn't score again until under 2:00 remained when two free throws by
Deborah VanDijk tied it at 82.
With 56 seconds left the Lady Rams converted a fast-break lay-up, and after another offensive foul against WBU the Queens were forced to start fouling. Texas Wesleyan was up to the free-throw challenge, hitting 7-of-8 down the stretch, rendering a final 3-pointer by Monreal too little, too late.
Monreal ended with 19 points, seven assists and four steals.
Jade Jones and
Maci Merket also contributed significantly, totaling 15 points each. Jones just missed a double-double with nine rebounds.
Also in double figures was freshman guard
Morgan Bennett, who had 12 points along with eight assists and four steals. Freshman post
Deborah VanDijk was close to a double-double, finishing with nine points and 10 rebounds.
The Flying Queens made 10 3-pointers but on 33 attempts (33 percent), compared to Texas Wesleyan's 50 percent (8-of-16). Both teams shot 85 percent from the free-throw line, the Flying Queens hitting 17-of-20 and the Lady Rams 23-of-27. Each team had 18 turnovers, and Wayland outrebounded TWU, 40-38.
Bailey Broadnax paced the Lady Rams with 27 points and nine boards. Katelynn Threats tacked on 18 point and 10 rebounds while Louallen got 15 points.
Wayland returns home for its final two games of the regular-season, starting with Thursday's 6 p.m. contest against Southwestern Christian (14-12, 6-10), a 70-60 winner at home Saturday over Bacone. The Flying Queens squeaked past the Lady Eagles in Bethany, Okla., back on Dec. 1 in the SAC opener, 72-69.
