Box Score 2 SAN ANTONIO – The Wayland Baptist volleyball team managed to get in two matches before being forced out of town by Hurricane Harvey at the Hotel Indigo at the Alamo Saints Classic.
Scheduled to take on No. 5 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) and Baker (Kan.) Friday, the Pioneers instead faced host Our Lady of the Lake, losing in three, and Benedictine at Mesa (Ariz.), winning in five, after the tournament schedule was reshuffled. Saturday's matches were cancelled to allow teams to travel home ahead of Harvey.
The Pioneers (5-2) fell to OLLU, 25-16, 25-20, 25-18 but bounced back against Benedictine, winning a hard-fought match, 21-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-16, 16-14.
"Both matches were sloppy," WBU coach Jim Giacomazzi said. "We had a whole lot of hitting errors and a lot of poor decisions…too many service errors, too. It was like we had ankle weights on. We looked slow and sluggish.
"It was very disappointing to see all of that."
Giacomazzi said the Pioneers showed "very little discipline and very little hustle. They were doing things they're not trained to do."
Against OLLU, Wayland ended with just 22 kills – eight by Amber Daniel – and hit .020. Jordan Breding and Elisabeth Piroli had 10 digs each, and the Pioneers were not credited with any blocks against the Saints, who hit .229.
Against Benedictine at Mesa, the Pioneers hit .290 with Mallorie Ellis getting 11 kills and hitting .364. Benedictine swing at a -.100 clip.
"Some weekends you take two steps forward, one step back. Today was four steps backwards," Giacomazzi said.
The good news is Wayland was able to get in two matches. Four tournament teams went home without getting to play at all.
"Hopefully we got it out of our system, but we played just about as poorly against Southwest" in a five-set win Wednesday in Hobbs, Giacomazzi said.
Wayland faces Southwest again for its home-opener at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 30 in Hutcherson Center.
"Hopefully the right team shows up for practice next week," Giacomazzi said.
