Box Score HOBBS, N.M. – After moving up to No. 21 in the NAIA Coaches' Top 25 poll Tuesday, the Wayland Baptist men's soccer team continued its winning streak here Wednesday afternoon, securing their fourth win over the University of the Southwest, 1-0.
"It was a hard game and I'm really proud of the guys," said WBU coach
Cristhian Ospina, whose team improved to 4-1-0 with its third straight win. The Mustangs, who were coming off a 2-1 victory over Lubbock Christian, fell to 1-2.
After a scoreless first half, Wayland junior
Lochlan Reus scored the game's only goal 15 minutes into the second period on an assist by sophomore
James Westfield.
"James came in and changed the game a little bit. He played really well," Ospina said in response to Westfield's contributions.
WBU goalkeeper
Ziggy Camejo secured his second shutout in as many outings, saving the only shot on goal managed by USW.
The final number of shots taken was 18-6 in favor of WBU. The Pioneers had eight on-goal shots.
Federico Ucar,
Ross Brown,
Gavin Shiels,
James Quinn,
Alex Castillo and Westfield took one a piece while Reus took two.
"It was more of a physical game (12 fouls, three yellow cards, two red cards) than anything and the guys showed that they can play physical and stay in the game with any team," Ospina said.
"We get better and better every time we play. The idea is to just peak at the right time in the season."
Midway through a four-match road swing, the Pioneers continue to travel this weekend for a doubleheader with the WBU women in Austin at 3 p.m. Saturday against Huston-Tillotson (0-1). The Rams, who lost to Concordia in their only match thus far, 3-1, travel to Waxahachie to take on Southwestern Assemblies of God on Thursday.
