Box Score AUSTIN – The Wayland Baptist men's soccer team's offense hasn't been scoring a ton of goals of late. Thanks to the Pioneers' outstanding defense, it doesn't have to.
The 21
st-ranked Pioneers posted their fourth straight shutout here Saturday afternoon, defeating Huston-Tillotson, 1-0.
It was the second 1-0 win in a row for Wayland (5-1), following Wednesday's victory over University of the Southwest in Hobbs, N.M. Before that, Wayland defeated Wiley College in Frisco on Sept. 9, 2-0.
The Pioneers' lone score against Huston-Tillotson (0-1-1) came from
Luis Almeida with just under 28 minutes left in the match.
Wayland ended with 14 shots compared to just five for the Rams, all in the second half. Seven of WBU's goals were on-target while Pioneer keeper
Hector Haros saved both of HTU's on-target shots.
Almeida,
Lochlan Reus and
Ricardo Ramos took three shots each while
Gavin Shiels and
Raheem Fleming took two apiece. All three of Almeida's attempts were on-goal as were two of Reus'.
It was the second shutout in as many appearances for Haros, a junior transfer who benefited from Wayland's 8-0 blowout of Paul Quinn that started the Pioneers' current four-match win streak.
Next up for WBU is a 2 p.m. match Monday in San Antonio against Our Lady of the Lake University (1-2-1), which picked up its first win in its last outing Sept. 9 at home against Jamestown, N.D., 3-0. Prior to that, the Saints had lost to Oklahoma City, 1-0, and to Grand View, Iowa, 5-0, while tying NCAA Division II's University of Texas-Tyler, 1-1.
After OLLU, Wayland opens Sooner Athletic Conference play at home Sept. 26 against Mid-America Christian.
