Box Score SAN ANTONIO – Wayland Baptist will go into its Sooner Athletic Conference opener looking for its first victory after dropping its final non-league outing here Monday afternoon to Our Lady of the Lake University, 3-0.
Wayland coach
Shiloh Posey credited the Saints (1-3), saying, "The goals that were scored were well-placed shots. We did everything about right. Nobody was out of position, and there was no bad mistake on our part."
OLLU notched its first goal less than four minutes into the match on a penalty kick by Brooke Cousins following a foul in the box on Wayland.
"It didn't start off on the right foot for us," Posey said.
OLLU made it 2-0 at the 24-minute mark then scored the final goal of the match some five minutes before halftime.
Wayland ended with four shots, one by
Chelsea Beaubouef and three by
Megan Attenborough. All three of Attenborough's attempts were on-goal.
"We had some chances on goal today," Posey said.
The Saints took 23 shots, 13 of which were on-target.
Erin Moon saved 10 of them, one shy of her season-high.
Posey feels his team is coming together.
"The scores may not show it, but second half of Saturday's game (against Paul Quinn in Austin) and all of today the girls finally played well," the coach said. "They finally found a common cause to play for, more than just being on the same team. Something finally brought them together. When you find common ground to work from the game can be played. It's not just about the game, it's about being a team.
"I hope that what they learned will be a step in the right direction and we'll continue to move forward."
Wayland (0-6) plays its first home match after four road trips on Tuesday, Sept. 26 in the SAC debut against Mid-America Christian (3-1). The Lady Evangels play at Manhattan Christian College (Kan.) today and host Sterling College (Kan.) Saturday prior to their SAC opener.
"We're still dealing with some injuries, so we'll rest up and then hopefully start strong in conference and do everything we can to gain the ground we lost," Posey said.
