Defense solid in home-opener vs. LCU

Box Score They still have some issues to work out on offense, but the Wayland Baptist women's soccer team's defense appears to be pretty darn solid.

Despite being outshot 28-4, the Pioneers gave up only two goals to Lubbock Christian University as the Lady Chaps walked away with a 2-0 victory Monday night at Hilliard Field.

"It was a whole lot of defense tonight," WBU coach Shiloh Posey said following his team's home-opener. "Our back four (Juliana Christensen, Audrey Sierra-Bogan, Valeria Garcia and Natalie Stahmann) did an extremely good job, and I thought Erin (goalkeeper Erin Moon) played lights out as well. She kept us in the game along with the back line."

In fact, LCU (2-1) scored its first goal after one of Moon's nine saves. Moon deflected a shot from LCU's Hollie Windham before Kate O'Gara punched in the rebound in the 30th minute.

All four of Wayland's shots came after halftime: two by Megan Attenborough and one each from Taylor Van Dyke and Stone Graham.

"We made some adjustments at halftime and had a few decent attacks in the second half and gave ourselves a couple of opportunities. We had one good counter-attack," Posey said. "We changed a little bit of the formation in the middle and played a little more long-ball offense, which we don't normally do. It worked a couple of times. We just have to keep working on that portion of it as well."

"That final ball is what we're lacking right now. We can't break the ice on a goal."

LCU picked up an insurance goal when O'Gara assisted Cara Hunt in the 59th minute. Fourteen Lady Chaps accounted for their 28 shots.

"I thought the effort level was pretty solid tonight," Posey said. "We're getting close. We'll keep working at it and keep pushing."
The Pioneers head back on the road for their next match at 4 p.m. Friday against Sul Ross State (0-1). NCAA Division III SRSU lost its season-opener to fifth-ranked Trinity University on Monday in San Antonio, 2-0.

"We definitely need to get the win down there," Posey said.

It will be the first-ever women's soccer match between WBU and SRSU.
