Box Score 2 FULLERTON, Calif. –
Jim Giacomazzi and his Wayland Baptist volleyball team came away from its first action of the season with lots of lessons learned and even more things to work on.
After falling in their first two matches of the season at the Hope University Summer Slam on Wednesday, the Pioneers dropped a couple more Thursday, bowing to Aquinas, Mich., 25-12, 25-21, 25-18, and to The Master's, Calif., 25-19, 25-16, 25-19.
The results left Wayland 0-4 on the young season but with plenty of time to get players healthy and work on shortfalls before the next outing in a couple of weeks. That contest – against Mid-America Christian on Aug. 31 – will serve as the Pioneers' home- and Sooner Athletic Conference-opener.
After falling to a pair of California teams – Top 25 vote-getter Vanguard and La Sierra – in three sets Wednesday, Wayland was looking to pick up its first victory Thursday against another team receiving Top 25 votes, Aquinas, or The Master's.
That win didn't come against either.
Against Aquinas, the Pioneers hit .057, recording 20 kills versus 15 errors.
Amber Daniel notched seven kills while hitting .174, while another sophomore,
Kellie Kozak, ended with six smashes and hit .136. Freshman
Tacie Bell and Daniel led the team with seven digs, while freshman
Renzelle Horner tabbed 17 assists. Aquinas hit .271.
Wayland's hitting percentage dipped to .018 against The Master's as the Pioneers recorded 20 kills against 18 errors. The Master's hit .200.
Alex Wood and Kozak put down six kills each while Daniel got five. Horner finished with 14 kills and 10 digs while
Jessica Nguyen dug 12 balls.
