Flying Queens dump in record 17 3s

Thanks in large part to red-hot shooting that produced a record 17 3-pointers and excellent ball security that made for only three turnovers, the fifth-ranked Wayland Baptist Flying Queens logged another convincing Sooner Athletic Conference victory Saturday afternoon in Hutcherson Center, taking out John Brown University, 90-49.

"This team is playing well," Wayland coach Alesha Ellis said after one of her squad's best performances of the season. "(John Brown) made us nervous, but we played a really good game today and it came at a really good time."

While posting their seventh win in a row, the Flying Queens (17-2, 11-0 SAC) snapped the Golden Eagles' five-game winning streak.

The Golden Eagles (12-6, 8-3) held the lead only once, when their all-time leading scorer, Baily Cameron, hit a 3-pointer right out of the gate. The Queens answered with a 3 from Kambrey Blakey to tie it up, and Wayland ended the quarter with a 7-0 run to lead 28-17.

The Queens finished out the first half with a 22-point lead, 48-26, after outscoring the Golden Eagles in the second period, 20-9. The Queens forced 11 turnovers in the first half while limiting their own to only one.

Wayland also hit an amazing 11 3-pointers in the first 20 minutes. The Queens hit No. 10 – resulting in free McDonald's French fries for the fans – just 3½ minutes in the second quarter.

The Flying Queens broke the program record of 15 3s on one of Maci Merket's bombs with 7:15 minutes left in the game. Merket added a 17th 45 seconds later.

Wayland, which finished out the game by holding John Brown to a seven-point fourth quarter, launched 43 3s (four shy of the program record) and shot 40 percent from long range. Ten Flying Queens put up 3s and eight connected, led by Merket and Blakey who both went 4-of-6. Junior forward Deborah VanDijk even got in on the action as she knocked down two 3s, giving her four for her career.

Blakey, Merket and Kaylee Edgemon ended with a game-high 16 points apiece, while freshman point guard Payton Brown added 12 points and a game-best eight rebounds.

Cameron, averaging 17 points a game, led the Golden Eagles with 12, followed by Taylor Fergen with 11. JBU went 18-of-55 (33 percent) from the field and 3-of-16 (19 percent) from the 3-point line.

"We knew going into this game that JBU is very well coached and that we were going to have to run them off the 3-point line, which we did," Ellis said. "We executed our game plans better than we have in a long time.

"I'm very proud of the team tonight for what they did on both ends. We've been trying to hold our turnovers to under 10, so three is awesome. We've never done that before," Ellis said. "We took better shots. We were poised and patient, which really helps cut down on turnovers."

Ellis said the Flying Queens will look forward to Feb. 7 when they take on the Golden Eagles in Siloam Springs, Ark., where Wayland has lost four of its five games under Ellis.

"Hopefully this year we can get another one," the coach said.

Next, the Queens hit the road to take on Mid-America Christian at 6 p.m. Thursday in Oklahoma City. MACU (12-4, 6-4), which Wayland defeated 101-82 back on Dec. 1, will be coming off Saturday's 89-68 win over Central Christian. The Flying Queens end next weekend in Chickasha taking on USAO (10-8, 5-5).

"The girls are locked in and ready to go on this road trip," Ellis said.
