eSports Pioneers claim first-ever victory

The Wayland Baptist eSports Pioneers had a big weekend this past Saturday, wrapping up the NACE Fall 2019 Championship and claiming their first win in the TESPA Overwatch Varsity Championship.

14025Wayland's SMITE team started the day with a rematch with Averett University, Va., and while Averett did claim victory the match was very well played, according to Pioneers coach Duncan Sweeney.

"The Pioneers communicated well, cleared map objectives strategically, and have improved in the short time since their first match with Averett. In fact, the team earned a spot in the top eight of the SMITE Championship, but unfortunately will not get to compete due to fall break," Sweeney said.

Next, Overwatch first played against Pepperdine University, Calif., a team with an average ranking of platinum. Travis Dutton ttime777 filled in on Tank role, as well as new team captain Eric Walters on Damage. The Pioneers played a grueling set of back and forth, but in the end, Pepperdine took the victory.

14027A second match versus Robert Morris University, Pa., was scheduled for 5 p.m., but, unfortunately, they did not report for the match, giving the Pioneers their first victory in program history.

While SMITE has wrapped up for this season, Overwatch will have its final games Oct. 26 at 3 and 5 p.m.in the Meadows Mothership eSports Arena.
