By virtue of three straight forfeit wins to end the regular-season, Wayland Baptist's first-year eSports team qualified for the TESPA Overwatch playoffs. On Saturday, the Pioneers earned another forfeit victory in the post-season's first round before falling victim to one of the top teams in the country.
Wayland was ready to face Alma College (Mich.) in the first round Saturday, but Alma was a no-show, giving Wayland it's fourth-straight forfeit victory.
"There were 18 forfeits out of 64 first-round matches," WBU coach
Duncan Sweeney said.
The Pioneers then took on Washington State, a team ranked No. 2. Wayland faced WSU about a month earlier in a best-of-3 of lost 2-0. This time, in a best-of-5, the Coogs won, 3-0.
Wayland lined up Eric Walters (Team Captain) and
Joey Pena on Damage,
Evan Puckett and
Daniel Ratliff on Support, and Zach Neeley and Travis Dutton on Tank.
"We have come a long way since we first played Washington State back in October," Sweeney said. "I am very proud of the athletes' progress and excited to see the team continue improving."
Wayland's eSports season will resume in the spring.
