Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Queens soar past Central Christian, 110-59

Coming off of their Thursday night win over Langston, the No. 7 Wayland Baptist Flying Queens took the court with confidence Saturday afternoon at Hutcherson Center and rolled out another triple-digit game, defeating Central Christian College (Kan.), 110-59.

"I thought we started the game a lot better than we have started the last three games," Wayland coach Alesha Ellis said, "We talked about getting out there and throwing the first punch and taking the advantage at the very beginning, and we did a great job of that."

The Queens (19-4, 13-2 Sooner Athletic Conference) came out running right away and opened the game by scoring the first nine points against the Lady Tigers (2-20, 1-14) in the first three minutes. The first period ended with the Queens already firmly in command, 28-8.

Wayland allowed only eight points again in the second and forged a 55-16 halftime lead. While the Queens went 20-of-39 (51 percent) from the field and finished the half 5-of-12 (42 percent) three-point shooting, the Lady Tigers shot just 14 percent (5-of-36) and 3-of-23 (13 percent) from the three.

The Flying Queens, who led by as many as 56, finished with 110 points against Central for the second time this season, having won previously in McPherson, Kan., 110-68. It was their eighth 100-plus point game this season.

Kaylee Edgemon led the Queens with 18 points, followed by Margaret Gaydon with 15, Payton Brown and Maci Merket with 13 each, and Morgan Bennett and Kambrey Blakey, who each chipped in 11. Merket also had 12 rebounds, recording her fourth double-double of the season.

"I felt like our girls executed and did things really well today," Ellis said.

Wayland scored 50 points in the paint and 35 on fast breaks as they notched their eighth 100-plus point game this season. The Queens' bench outscored the Lady Tigers, 50-18.

"Our bench went in and did big things," Ellis said.

"One thing we've been focusing on is rebounds, and (Cailyn) Breckel had 15, which is huge. I'm really proud of her. It's nice to know your players can do more than just score." Breckel also finished with nine points.

The Lady Tigers had only one player in double figures: Piper Kalthoff with 20,

"We're trying to overcome adversity a little bit better. If we can stay mentally tough then I feel like we have a chance of doing well for these upcoming games," ellis said.

The Queens will be on the road for their next three conference games, starting with John Brown (13-9, 9-6) in Siloam Springs, Ark., at 6 p.m. Thursday. John Brown fell to league-leading, 12th-ranked Oklahoma City on Saturday, 79-33. Wayland defeated the Golden Eagles earlier this season, 90-49.

"We have a target on our back so we have to be more prepared than anybody for these next games, especially John Brown on the road," Ellis said. "They're going to be after us, and if we don't bring our 'A' game there's a chance we could lose it, so we just really have to prepare."
