Younger Queens get job done vs. Bacone

Conference Standings

MUSKOGEE, Okla. – In high spirits after their much-desired road win against John Brown on Thursday, the seventh-ranked Wayland Baptist Flying Queens traveled to Muskogee, Okla., to secure another Sooner Athletic Conference victory on Saturday over Bacone College, 93-36.

With coach Alesha Ellis opting to hold out three top players in Maci Merket, Deborah VanDijk and Morgan Bennett, the Queens (21-4, 15-2 SAC) were led by sophomore transfer Kaylee Edgemon and her new career-high of 23 points on 9-of-15 field goal shooting as well as 4-of-6 from the 3-point line. Two others also recorded career highs: redshirt freshman Jolie Donaldson with 13 and freshman Caycee Holson, who finished with eight.

Kambrey Blakey finished with 15 points while freshman Cailyn Breckel picked up a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. It was the freshman's third double-double of the season; Breckel had a triple-double (18 points, 12 rebounds, 12 assists) in Wayland's 113-26 win over Bacone last month.

Payton Brown matched Breckel's 11 points while Margaret Gaydon wound up with eight and Kelea Pool four.

"We have a few difficult games coming up, so I decided to rest a few of our starters," Ellis said. "I knew the rest of our girls had what it took to get it done, so I took advantage of that opportunity."

Edgemon wasted no time getting going, opening the game with a 3-pointer and going on to score 12 of Wayland's 16 points in the first quarter. Payton Brown had the other four as the Queens' lead was a modest 16-7 after the first eight minutes.

"Kaylee's shot was on and that really helped us get off to a good start offensively," coach Alesha Ellis said. "We had a goal to keep them under 40 points and to out-rebound them on the offensive boards by at least 10 and we did both of those things."

All eight Flying Queen who played put points on the board and contributed in rebounds. Wayland finished with 53 rebounds compared to Bacone's 29.

The victory came on 33-of-70 field goal shooting and 10-of-25 from the three, but just 17-of-33 (52 percent) free throws. The Queens also scored 34 points on fast breaks and forced 27 turnovers, more than twice their 13.

"I didn't feel like we came out defensively like we should have, but the second half was much better," Ellis said.

The Queens kept the Lady Warriors to 20 points in the first half and limited them to only 16 in the second.

Wayland's largest lead came late in the fourth quarter after they opened the period on an 18-7 run to get up on Bacone by 60 points, 93-33 with two minutes remaining in the game.

"I'm proud of them. I feel like the more our younger players get in there, the better we get as a team, and today was a good day for that."

The Queens will be back on the road to Goodwell, Okla., for their next conference game against Oklahoma Panhandle State at 6 p.m. Tuesday before they return home to face off against Southwestern Christian on Feb 14, and then No. 12 Oklahoma City on Feb. 16.
