Hiawatha and Regina Culver – who have raised three outstanding student-athletes, including Wayland's J.J. – will be speakers at this year's Team Wayland, and the public is invited.
Team Wayland is the WBU athletic department's annual kickoff to the academic year at which student-athletes gather for staff and team introductions. This year's event also will include an address by Hiawatha and Regina Culver.
Hiawatha is pastor of Rising Star Baptist Church in Lubbock and serves as chaplain for the Texas Tech men's basketball team. The Culvers' youngest son, Jarrett, played for the Red Raiders before being selected with the sixth pick of the 2019 NBA Draft. Eldest son Trey won two NCAA indoor championships at Tech and owns the fourth-best high jump (7 feet, 7¾ inches) in NCAA history. Middle son J.J. is a senior at Wayland where last season he was Sooner Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Year and an NAIA First Team All-American.
WBU Athletics Director
Rick Cooper invites the public to Team Wayland to hear the Culvers' address and to meet the 2019-20 WBU student-athletes.
"Hiawatha and Regina did an amazing job raising their three boys. Not only are they great athletes, but more importantly outstanding young men," Cooper said.
Team Wayland will be held at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 25 in Hutcherson Center on the WBU campus. Admission is free.
