Wayland sweeps Southwest again

Box Score HOBBS, N.M. – A month after they swept them in Plainview, the Wayland Baptist volleyball team blanked University of the Southwest across the state line on Tuesday as the Pioneers defeated the Mustangs, 25-20, 26-24, 25-20.

Despite the win in a break for conference play, WBU coach Jim Giacomazzi came away frustrated by his team's play.

"We're trying to get ready for tough competition this weekend so we wanted to work some things out tonight, but we continue to make too many mental errors," Giacomazzi said. "They're so afraid of making a mistake that they make huge mistakes."

The win – which followed the team's 25-21, 25-23, 25-20 victory over the Mustangs on Aug. 28 in Plainview – evened Wayland's record to 9-9. The Mustangs slipped to 4-13.

Statistics were not immediately available.

On the positive side, Giacomazzi said, "Everybody got a little playing time, no one got hurt, and we won. Plus, it's a close trip so we'll be home tonight."

The Pioneers are back home to host Texas Wesleyan at 7 p.m. Friday and Southwestern Assemblies of God at noon Saturday. Wayland and Texas Wesleyan (8-6) are tied for fourth in the conference standings at 4-2, a game in front of SAGU (9-6, 3-3).

The Rams are coming off a home loss Saturday to league-leading and 24th-ranked Oklahoma City (13-1, 7-0), 25-22, 25-21, 25-23, while the Lions, ranked the equivalent of 33rd in the NAIA, snapped a three-match losing skid against John Brown, Texas Wesleyan and OCU with a five-set win at home Saturday over Southwestern Christian.
