ODESSA – Wayland Baptist fell behind early and the Pioneers never found their rhythm in bowing to Texas-Permian Basin on Saturday night in Ratliff Stadium, 60-7.
The Pioneers (1-1) trailed the NCAA Division II Falcons, who were making their season debut, 39-7 at the half.
Wayland's lone touchdown came with 5 minutes left in the first quarter on a 22-yard pass from Mitchell Parsley to Noah Lujan. That made it 10-7, but the Pioneers were shut out after that.
The Falcons (1-0), meanwhile, scored almost every way possible: two passes, three rushes, a field goal, a safety and the two interceptions returned for touchdowns.
Wayland ended with a dozen first downs, 76 yards rushing and 155 yards passing, while the Falcons wound up with 21 firsts, 232 yards on the ground and 276 in the air.
The Pioneers' Mitchell Parsley completed 17-of-35 passes, with Brayln Kirby making six catches for 81 yards. Jerrell Peterson ran 21 times for 79 yards.
Linebacker Casey Buck led WBU in tackles with eight assisted and two solo stops. Manny Arguijo ended with nine tackles, and Dominque Taylor recorded a pair of sacks.
The Pioneers have next week off before hosting Arizona Christian in their Sooner Athletic Conference opener at 2 p.m. Sept. 21. The Firestorm, ranked the equivalent of 32nd in the NAIA, lost their season-opener to Montana St-Northern, 20-14, before bowing to NCAA Division I-FCS Abilene Christian on Saturday, 66-14.
