The Wayland Baptist Flying Queens racked up their 19
th straight win, and fifth consecutive 100-point home game, with a 108-53 victory Saturday afternoon over Langston University (Okla.).
Â
The fifth-ranked Queens (23-2, 14-1 Sooner Athletic Conference) didn't waste any time getting the ball rolling. By the end of the first they led 30-16, then, like most of Wayland's games of late, had it put away by halftime after outscoring Langston (10-12, 6-10) in the second period, 26-7, for a 33-point halftime lead, 56-23.
Â
Wayland's dominant second quarter came despite less-than-typical Queens shooting: 9-of-24 (38 percent). But they get the job done paired with a strong defense as the Queens forced 10 turnovers in the first 20 minutes.
Â
WBU's best offensive output came in the third with a 34-point quarter (13-of-18 from the field, 72 percent), making for a 90-41 advantage. The Flying Queens settled for 18 fourth-quarter points.
Â
Six players scored in double figures, led by
Jenna Cooper's 21 points, 13 of which came in the first half. She finished 9-of-12 from the field and also hauled in seven rebounds.
Kaylee Edgemon followed with 14 points,
Kambrey Blakey 13,
Morgan Bennett 12 points and nine assists, and
Payton Brown and
Tayjanna McGhee-Pleasant each chipped in 10 points.
Cailyn Breckel just missed a double-double with nine points and nine boards.
Â
Wayland outshot Langston 54 percent (42-of-78) to 32 percent (20-of-62). Asheika Alexander was the Lions' leading scorer and the only one reaching double figures with 18 points.
Â
Wayland finished with 17 turnovers, while Langston gave it away 24 times. Wayland also finished with an impressive 27 assists, compared to the Lions' 5. Wayland's bench contributed 49 points to the final 108.
Â
The Queens will hit the road to Oklahoma this week to take on Oklahoma-Panhandle State on Tuesday in Goodwell. OPSU sits at the bottom of SAC standings with an 0-15 conference record, 5-19 overall. The Queens defeated the Lady Aggies last month in Plainview, 80-59.
Â
The Queens then take on Bacone (3-19) in a non-conference game in Muskogee, Okla., before heading to Arkansas for a return to conference play against John Brown University (8-16 4-11) on Saturday.
Â
After that, on Feb. 27, is the much-anticipated showdown in the Hutch against top-ranked Oklahoma City University, currently 25-0.
