Seth Dixon and
Alex Pena have been named Wayland Baptist Student-Athletes of the Week.
Dixon and Pena are being recognized as a result of qualifying for the NAIA National Championships at last weekend's Sooner Athletic Conference/Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships on the campus of Central Christian College in McPherson, Kan.
Dixon made it all the way to the championship of the 165-pound weight class before falling to Oklahoma City's Connor Holman by 5-2 decision.
"Seth had a phenomenal tournament. This is a kid who took a few years away from wrestling to play football. He has returned to wrestling and isn't missing a beat," WBU wrestling coach
Kiiler Stephens said of Dixon, a former state champion at Hereford High School.
Â
At 133 pounds, Pena placed third after winning four of his five matches. He won his first two outings, fell in the semifinals, then won his final two matches.
Â
"Alex is the most talented kid I've worked with in a long time," Stephens said. "He has such a huge upside and I'm excited to see how he does at nationals."
Nationals is set for March 5 and 6 in Park City, Kan.
