NEW ORLEANS – Wayland Baptist won what will be its only two matches at the Wolf Pack Welcome Tournament, defeating a pair of Louisiana schools on Friday. The Pioneers first downed Xavier in five, 25-19, 16-25, 25-21, 24-26, 15-13, then dropped host Loyola in four, 25-21, 22-25, 25-21, 25-22.
Wayland (4-2) was set to take on the same two teams Saturday, but those matches were cancelled due to Hurricane Ida.
On Friday against Xavier (0-2), Wayland got 14 kills from both
Tatijana Markic and
Amber Daniel, who hit .333 and .297, respectively.
Ariel Marquez provided 17 digs and
Lucie Mahelova 13, with Mahelova – the reigning Sooner Athletic Conference Setter of the Week – producing 46 assists. Jayla Shultz logged a pair of aces two of WBU's six block-assists.
Against Loyola (4-6), which is ranked the equivalent of 36
th in the NAIA, the Pioneers got double-digit kills from five players, with Markic and Wendy Coppah getting 13 each and Daniel,
Paxton Patterson and Shultz 10 apiece. Newcomer Coppah hit .480, making just one error in 25 swings, while Patterson ended at .409 and Shultz .368.
Five players ended with double-digit digs, led by Daniel's 24. Marquez added 21,
Tevia Bell 12, Mahelova 11 and Markic 10. Mahelova recorded 58 assists. Six players combined for seven aces, with Markic getting two.
Alexa Hinojos had two of WBU's four solo blocks.
