HOBBS, N.M. – Wayland captured its fourth straight victory, sweeping University of the Southwest here Wednesday night to gain momentum for conference play.
The Pioneers (5-2) won with ease over the Lady Mustangs (1-7), 25-15, 25-20, 25-13.
"We had a very good first set, then we dabbled with two setters on the court in the second set and made too many mistakes," WBU coach
Jim Giacomazzi said. "The third set was like the first. We moved Wendy (Cobbah) from the right-side to the left-side and she had some very nice, dramatic swings."
Giacomazzi said
Amber Daniel also had some hard-hit balls, including on the final point of the match that ricocheted off the ceiling.
Statistics were not immediately available, but Giacomazzi said he felt
Alexa Hinojos had a good night offensively. We had one of our better blocking nights, and I was impressed with our passing. That gave our setters a lot of options.
"We could have done better defensively. We had some rallies last longer than they should have. But overall, the girls were very well-prepared mentally. It's not always easy to travel three hours and play. We're getting better at that. Hopefully that's a trend that will continue."
Wayland makes its home debut at 7 p.m. Friday when the Pioneers host Central Christian for the Sooner Athletic Conference opener. Then on Saturday, WBU plays Langston at 11 a.m. and Our Lady of the Lake in a non-conference match at 4 p.m., with Langston and OLLU squaring off in between at 1:30 p.m.
