It was a career day for sisters Kaitlyn and
Kaylee Edgemon on Saturday afternoon at the Hutch.
Â
Kaitlyn poured in 35 points while older sister Kaylee added 33 as the siblings powered No. 12 Wayland Baptist to a 95-76 victory over Langston in Sooner Athletic Conference play inside Hutcherson Center.
Â
"We are playing really good basketball right now. Our team spirit is at an all-time high and everyone is locked in," Wayland coach
Jason Cooper said.
Â
The Flying Queens (22-3, 14-2 SAC) pulled away from the Lady Lions (15-7, 10-6) with a 37-point fourth quarter as Wayland fended off upset-minded Langston. Wayland led by just three but got a 3-pointer from
Kaylee Edgemon at the end of the third period that kicked off a 23-4 run that increased the lead to 22.
Â
"I was proud of our defensive fortitude, especially in the second half," Coach Cooper said. "We held (Langston leading scorer Asheika) Alexander to six points in the second half, which was very big for our team." Alexander scored 12 points in the first half.
Â
It was a career-high scoring performance for both Edgemons. Kaitlyn's previous best was 27 points against Central Christian on Dec. 4 while Kaylee's was 30 against Science & Arts in the second game last season.
Â
Kaitlyn – coming off a 25-13-10 triple-double in Thursday's 86-49 win over Central Christian – was on pace to threaten the school record of 49 in the first half when she had 23. But she was held scoreless in the third before finishing strong in the fourth when both her and Kaylee had a dozen points apiece. Kaylee got 10 in the third for a 22-point second half.
Â
Kaitlyn finished 13-of-23 from the field, including 3-of-7 3-pointers, while Kaylee was 12-of-21. They combined to go 14-of-14 at the free-throw line, with Kaitlyn contributing eight and Kaylee six. Kaitlyn also charted seven rebounds, five blocks and four steals, while Kaylee tacked on eight rebounds, three blocks and one theft.
Â
"We've talked a lot about celebrating your teammates' success, and today you look up and both Edgemon girls score in the 30s. I don't remember ever coaching or watching a team or two girls scored over 30 like that," Coach Cooper said. "I imagine in all of the great Flying Queen history, having two sisters combine for over 60 points like these girls did today hasn't happened very often, if ever."
Â
Jenna Cooper added 17 points, nine assists and seven rebounds for Wayland, which hit 20-of-22 free throws.
Â
"When you see the Edgemons' stat line like that and then your third high scorer of the game had 17 points and nine assists, well, you just know that the girls are doing something right and playing ball the right way. I love the unselfishness that the girls are playing with right now," Coach Cooper said.
Â
The Flying Queens are back home for two more games next weekend, first against John Brown (12-12, 8-8) on Thursday night and then Oklahoma City (14-7, 9-7) on Saturday afternoon. In the first half of conference play, WBU picked up two forfeit victories over JBU and OCU due to COVID-19.
