Kaylee Edgemon provided the offensive firepower and
Angel Hayden led the rebounding dominance as Wayland Baptist overwhelmed Oklahoma City University in Sooner Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon in Hutcherson Center, 94-64.
Edgemon ended with 35 points – the second straight game she's posted a career-high – and Hayden brought down a career-best 17 boards as the No. 12 Flying Queens secured one of their most lopsided victories ever over the Stars.
Leading by 13 at halftime, Wayland (23-3, 15-2 SAC) doubled that margin in the third quarter, outscoring OCU (14-8, 9-8) 22-9. The Flying Queens led by as many as 37 points until the Stars scored the game's final seven points. In a series that dates back to 1987 and has featured more than 70 matchups, a 3-pointer with eight seconds to play helped OCU avoid suffering its worst loss ever against Wayland, that being a 32-point, 107-75 final in 1995-96. (The Queens also beat OCU by 30 that season, 117-87.)
A week after Edgemon scored 33 points against Langston, the three-time NAIA All-American ended with 35, hitting 16-of-24 field goals including 3-of-5 3-pointers.
Jenna Cooper followed with 17 points to go with seven rebounds and eight assists, while
Kaitlyn Edgemon tacked on 16 points.
Hayden's 17 boards – the sixth time this season the point guard has reached double-digit rebounds – bested her previous high of 13 against Loyola (La.) during the Queens Classic Nov. 11. Hayden, who had eight offensive and nine defensive rebounds, also logged eight assists and seven points.
Hayden's glass crashing helped Wayland almost double up OCU on the boards, 49-25.
The Queens' 12 3s (on 27 attempts) were their second-most of the season, behind 15 against Central Christian. Seven different Queens contributed to the total, led by three bombs each from the Edgemon sisters.
Wayland next hosts John Brown (13-12, 9-8), a 78-73 overtime winner over Oklahoma-Panhandle State, at 5 p.m. Monday. That game was postponed from Thursday due to weather issues. Like OCU, it will be the first time the Queens have faced JBU this season after Wayland picked up a forfeit victory due to COVID in the first half of league play.
