WAXAHACHIE – Wayland Baptist used a strong second half to get back on the winning track as the No. 11 Flying Queens defeated Southwestern Assemblies of God University here Saturday afternoon, 69-59.
Wayland (4-2, 1-1 Sooner Athletic Conference), coming off a 70-62 conference-opening loss to North Texas-Dallas on Thursday, jumped out to a 9-2 lead but saw the Lady Lions (2-5, 1-2) go on a 17-2 run to lead by eight, 19-11. The Queens got right back in it when
Jenna Cooper-Jackson scored seven straight points to open the second period. Jackson, who was scoreless in the first quarter, went on to score 14 points in the second, the final bucket tying it at 29-all at intermission.
Wayland's
Kynnan Shields scored the first points of the second half and the Queens never trailed again. WBU led 43-39 after three and opened up a 14-point lead, 62-48, on a bucket by
Taylor Houston with 3:21 to play.
Jackson ended with 19 points and eight assists while Shields got her first double-digit scoring game with 15.
Taryn Shultz nailed three 3s and ended with 11 points while Houston got eight.
Kaitlyn Edgemon scored just five points but contributed eight rebounds, five assists, five steals and four blocks.
SAGU, hurt by 23 turnovers, was led on offense by Neeley Tilley-Bedick, who dropped in six 3s and scored a game-high 20 points. Jazra Williams added 17 points and Rylee Lavender 11.
The Queens take a break for league play by traveling to Pueblo, Colo., for the Thanksgiving Classic, taking on Colorado-Colorado Springs at 2 p.m. Friday and Colorado State-Pueblo at 6 p.m. Saturday.
