PUEBLO, Colo. –
Kaitlyn Edgemon matched her season-high with 26 points, leading No. 11 Wayland Baptist to a 73-65 victory over UC-Colorado Springs in the opening game of the CSU-Pueblo Thanksgiving Classic here Friday afternoon.
Wayland (5-2) never trailed in the game. The Flying Queens led 21-9 late in the first quarter before going up by 13 early in the second. The Mountain Lions (1-4) cut it to three just before the half, but WBU fought off the charge, just as they did when UCCS made numerous second-half runs.
It was again a 3-point game late in the third, but Wayland ended the period with five straight points then opened the fourth with a bucket by
Hadlee Gomez to open up a 10-point lead.
The Mountain Lions answered with a 6-0 run and again cut it to four, 54-50, with 6:12 to go. But that's as close as Wayland let them as the Queens maintained between a six- and nine-point cushion the rest of the way.
It was the second time this season Edgemon scored 26 points, which she did the first time against Our Lady of the Lake University on Nov. 11. She hit 9-of-16 field goals and 7-of-9 free throws.
Jenna Cooper-Jackson added 16 points, putting in 7-of-8 from the free-throw line where Wayland finished 21-of-25 (84 percent).
Kynnan Shields added eight points while
Taylor Houston and
Maria Ghaleb got six each. Jackson led Wayland in both rebounds with six and assists with four.
Both teams struggled from the 3-point line, where Wayland was 2-of-11 and UCCS 1-of-8. The teams combined for 39 turnovers.
WBU is back in action at 6 p.m. Saturday against tourney host Colorado State-Pueblo.
