Flying Queens slip up against D-II ThunderWolves

PUEBLO, Colo. – The Wayland Baptist Flying Queens ended their Thanksgiving Classic weekend against a pair of NCAA Division II opponents with a 1-1 record, following Friday's win over Colorado-Colorado Springs with a 77-56 setback Saturday evening to tournament host Colorado State Pueblo.

Wayland (5-3) led for the only time when Kynnan Shields opened the game with a bucket. The ThunderWolves (2-3), coming off a 65-45 loss Friday to Emporia State (Kan.), scored the next eight points and never gave up the lead.

CSU-Pueblo led 19-13 after the first quarter and 37-26 at the half. Wayland pulled to within single digits, 39-30, early in the third and again early in the fourth, 52-43, but that's as close as the Flying Queens could get. It was a 10-point game with five minutes to play, but the home team went on a late run to pull away.

Shields led Wayland with 12 points while also getting nine rebounds, Taryn Schultz added 11 points and seven boards while Kaitlyn Edgemon and Jenna Cooper-Jackson got 10 points each. Jackson also had nine rebounds.

The Queens were cold from 3-point range for the second straight game, following Friday's 2-for-11 performance with a 3-for-14 effort.

CSU-Pueblo, which hit 14-of-44 (32 percent) from distance, saw five players reach double figures, led by Morgan Dial's 17 points.

Wayland held a 50-44 edge in rebounds but committed 14 turnovers compared to just eight for the ThunderWolves.

The Queens return to Sooner Athletic Conference play Thursday against Southwestern Christian, hosting the Lady Eagles at 6 p.m. for their first home league game of the season. WBU ends next week hosting No. 23 Mid-America Christian.
