AUSTIN – Wayland Baptist managed to lead early against the University of Texas, but the Lady Longhorns eventually were too much for the Flying Queens and recorded a 107-46 victory in an exhibition game here Friday night.
Taylor Houston's layup gave the 10
th-ranked Flying Queens (1-1) a 9-7 lead four minutes into the game. But the Lady Horns scored the next 12 points and never trailed again.
Texas led 28-15 after the first period and 55-30 at the half. The Queens struggled in the second half and were outscored 52-16.
Kaitlyn Edgemon was the only Flying Queen to reach double figures with 13.
Hadlee Gomez was WBU's next top scorer with seven, while
Canton Moreno, who had a pair of 3-pointers, and
Maria Ghaleb added six each.
Five Lady Horns scored in double figures, led by Aaliyah Moore with 19.
Wayland shot 36 percent (18-of-50) from the field compared to UT's 51 percent (41-of-80). Neither team was hot from long range with the Queens making 5-of-18 3s (28 percent) and the Lady Horns 3-of-13 (23 percent). Texas held a decisive edge at the free-throw line, 22-of-33 compared to WBU's 5-of-9.
WBU was outrebounded 48-28, with UT grabbing 24 offensive boards compared to eight for the Queens.
Edgemon and
Kynnan Shields logged six rebounds apiece, while
Jenna Cooper-Jackson finished with six assists.
Attendance was placed at 2,367.
Coach
Jason Cooper's team next hosts the Queens Classic, taking on Our Lady of the Lake on Friday at a time to be determined and LSU-Alexandria at noon Saturday.
