GOODWELL, Okla. – Jenna Cooper-Jackson, Kynnan Shields and Kaitlyn Edgemon combined for 63 points as the Wayland Baptist Flying Queens overwhelmed Oklahoma-Panhandle State in Sooner Athletic Conference play here Thursday evening, 84-54.
"I thought it was a solid overall game. We shot a great percentage from the floor (season-best 54 percent) and that is a credit to our players' commitment to staying organized and executing offense," WBU coach Jason Cooper said.
In rolling to its fourth-straight win, Wayland (9-4, 5-2 SAC) was never challenged after taking a 26-15 first-quarter lead. The Queens led 44-25 at halftime then outscored the Aggies (1-9, 1-6) 19-10 in the third quarter. WBU's largest lead was 37 points in the fourth quarter.
"We closed the first half with a run where we scored on 4-of-5 of our final possessions. That was a first this year. I think our overall offensive efficiency was excellent," Cooper said.
The Queens committed a season-low six turnovers while OPSU gave it away 22 times, and Wayland matched a season-best by shooting 54 percent (34-of-63). The Aggies shot 39 percent (22-of-57)
Jackson scored 23 points, Shields a season-best 21 and Edgemon 19. Edgemon also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds and dished out five assists, matching Manuella Donmeza's five helpers. Donmeza also came up with three steals.
Only one Aggie reached double-figures: Mariah Williams with 10 points.
The Queens now take a three-week holiday break, returning to action at home Jan. 5 against John Brown University (9-4, 3-4).
"I hate to have a break while we are finally rolling, but the girls have worked so hard and I know they are ready and deserve a little break…but just a little one," Cooper said.
