CISCO – Miscues, in part, did in the Wayland Baptist softball team here Friday as the Pioneers dropped a doubleheader to Cisco Junior College, 13-1 and 8-5.
Wayland (2-7) committed four errors in each game while Cisco (19-11) played error-free the entire afternoon.
In the second game, Wayland outhit Cisco by a 9-7 count, and the Pioneers scored five runs in their first two at-bats. But WBU didn't score after the second inning, and the four errors contributed to six unearned runs by the Wranglers.
On the mound,
Sammy Briones went the distance, allowing two earned runs on seven hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Wayland's nine hits included three by second baseman
Mikayla Carrillo, who had a home run and a double and produced three RBIs and scored twice. Center fielder
Madison Martinez added a pair of knocks.
Cisco controlled the opener from the onset, scoring runs in all four of its at-bats – including five in the third – before the game ended on the eight-run rule after 4½ innings.
The Pioneers were limited to four singles by Carrillo,
Hope Castillo,
Cloe DeLeon and
Alexis Lopez. DeLeon logged the lone RBI.
Three pitchers –
Ashley Bauler, Lopez and Martinez – combined to allow eight hits while walking seven and striking out none in four frames.
The Pioneers next get a rematch against University of the Southwest in Hobbs, N.M., at 1 p.m. Tuesday. WBU played its first two games against the Mustangs three weeks ago and lost two close ones, 3-1 and 4-3.
(Wayland is playing an exhibition schedule in 2023 before competing as a Sooner Athletic Conference team with a countable schedule in 2024).
